Child Counselling
Child counselling offers children a safe and supportive therapeutic environment where they can process and work through the challenges they’re experiencing in their life at their own pace.
Child counselling is client-centered, focused on the individual needs of each child. Interventions used are play-based, fun, and flexible in meeting the child where they are at. The Canadian Association for Play Therapy (CAPT) explains the significance of play within their Brochure by writing, “Play is our first language. Just as adults use words to communicate, children use play. When playing, we express thoughts and feelings that might otherwise remain hidden.” Through play, children can act out, problem solve, and work through the struggles and barriers they are facing, developing more positive ways of coping. Play allows children the opportunity to try out new roles and ways of being that can be transferred into their real lives. Play is a vehicle for change, helping children to strengthen their sense of self and self-esteem. In addition to Play Therapy, other interventions used include: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Attachment-based interventions, and Mindfulness.
Child counselling recognizes the importance of the family system and encourages caregiver involvement, as the family unit is the base from which children navigate their world. Caregiver involvement may look differently for each child, and may involve parent-child sessions, check-ins, and/or individual sessions for both child and parent, supporting the child, caregiver(s), and family system as a whole. Caregiver involvement can help to strengthen the work being done in session: providing encouragement and support, practicing the work being learned, and helping to adopt new more healthy ways of relating as a family unit.
Child Counselling is for children 12 years of age and younger. Prior to a session with your child, proof of custody or consent from both parents is required.
