This week (February 6th – 12th) is National Play Therapy Week, a time to highlight the importance of Play Therapy and the powers of play! The Association for Play Therapy (APT) put together this short and funny video to help demonstrate how children communicate and express their thoughts and feelings differently than we do as adults, as play is children’s language. The Canadian Association for Play Therapy (CAPT) is Canada’s Association.

Thank you everyone so so much for all of your help with the food drive, it was such a big success!!! Such big thanks and appreciation to all those who helped donate food to those in need, as well as help teach a young person about community and what good can happen when we work together. Jacob Hespeler High School student, Zack, did an amazing job volunteering his time to help organize the food drive. This was Zack’s first food drive and he was blown away by everyone’s generosity, so thank you A really big shout out to BuildSafe – Construction Safety Services Inc. and Edison Engineers Inc., who helped donate so much, and had a friendly donating competition with one another!:) A big thank you to Brandee from the Cambridge City Foodbank who drove out to pick up the donations and volunteered her muscles to help carry the multiple boxes of food collected
Thank you all! (permission given by Zack and his mom for Zack’s name and photo to be shared)

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
As shared by the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW): Orange Shirt Day is observed each year on September 30 to recognize, raise awareness and support action to address the effects and ongoing legacy of residential schools. September is a significant time for honouring the experiences of survivors and mourning those lost to the genocide of residential schools, as this was the time of year in which Indigenous children were taken from their homes. Phyllis Webstad was one such child, among many tens of thousands. Phyllis’ story of being stripped of her “shiny orange shirt,” picked out to wear proudly on her first day at “mission school,” and the lifelong impact this had on her has become a movement. Thanks to Phyllis and the work of the Orange Shirt Society, orange shirts now serve as a visible reminder of the historic and ongoing harm caused by residential schools. To recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools, and in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 80th call to action, Canada marks its first ever National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Orange Shirt Day this year. As we reflect on this day, the statement “every child matters” stands as a stark reminder of those children who did not make it home. As the horrific confirmation of unmarked graves continues at former residential school sites, we wish to acknowledge this ongoing period of grief and the trauma this has caused. We also acknowledge the role the social work profession has played in contributing to deep injustices perpetrated against Indigenous peoples. As social workers, we must work to dismantle these practices, actively participate in reconciliation, and respect the rights and self-determination of Indigenous peoples. As an Association, to respect and honour survivors we understand that a commitment to a future grounded in meaningful dialogue and action on reconciliation is key. We remain committed to our journey towards reconciliation and equity integration. As a part of this important work, the OASW team recently participated in Circles for Reconciliation’s #94in94 Campaign, reading and discussing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Actions as a group. We encourage all social workers to do the same and we will continue to seek out and develop opportunities to assist our members to take action to decolonize their practice and advance reconciliation. Increase Your Knowledge and Understanding. Listen to Phyllis Webstad share her experience of the St. Joseph Residential School and visit www.orangeshirtday.org to learn more. Explore the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and their virtual programming for Truth and Reconciliation Week (September 27 to October 1).Take part in learning opportunities offered through OASW’s Learning Centre and Local Engagement Networks including Showing Up as Allies, a monthly gathering to discuss how social workers can act in ally ship with Indigenous communities. MONSTER, A RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
By Dennis Saddleman
I HATE YOU RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL
I HATE YOU
YOU’RE A MONSTER
A HUGE HUNGRY MONSTER
BUILT WITH STEEL BONES 5
BUILT WITH CEMENT FLESH
YOU’RE A MONSTER
BUILT TO DEVOUR
INNOCENT NATIVE CHILDREN
YOU’RE A COLD-HEARTED MONSTER 10
COLD AS THE CEMENT FLOORS
YOU HAVE NO LOVE
NO GENTLE ATMOSPHERE
YOUR UGLY FACE GROOVED WITH RED BRICKS
YOUR MONSTER EYES GLARE 15
FROM GRIMY WINDOWS
MONSTER EYES SO EVIL
MONSTER EYES WATCHING
TERRIFIED CHILDREN
COWER WITH SHAME 20
I HATE YOU RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL I HATE YOU
YOU’RE A SLIMY MONSTER
OOZING IN THE SHADOWS OF MY PAST
GO AWAY LEAVE ME ALONE
YOU’RE FOLLOWING ME FOLLOWING ME WHEREVER I GO 25
YOU’RE IN MY DREAMS IN MY MEMORIES
GO AWAY MONSTER GO AWAY
I HATE YOU YOU’RE FOLLOWING ME
I HATE YOU RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL I HATE YOU
YOU’RE A MONSTER WITH HUGE WATERY MOUTH 30
MOUTH OF DOUBLE DOORS
YOUR WIDE MOUTH TOOK ME
YOUR YELLOW STAINED TEETH CHEWED
THE INDIAN OUT OF ME
YOUR TEETH CRUNCHED MY LANGUAGE 35
GRINDED MY RITUALS AND MY TRADITIONS
YOUR TASTE BUDS BECAME BITTER
WHEN YOU TASTED MY RED SKIN
YOU SWALLOWED ME WITH DISGUST
YOUR FACE WRINKLED WHEN YOU 40
TASTED MY STRONG PRIDE 2
I HATE YOU RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL I HATE YOU
YOU’RE A MONSTER
YOUR THROAT MUSCLES FORCED ME
DOWN TO YOUR STOMACH 45
YOUR THROAT MUSCLES SQUEEZED MY HAPPINESS
SQUEEZED MY DREAMS
SQUEEZED MY NATIVE VOICE
YOUR THROAT BECAME CLOGGED WITH MY SACRED SPIRIT
YOU COUGHED AND YOU CHOKED 50
FOR YOU CANNOT WITH STAND MY
SPIRITUAL SONGS AND DANCES
I HATE YOU RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL I HATE YOU
YOU’RE A MONSTER
YOUR STOMACH UPSET EVERY TIME I WET MY BED 55
YOUR STOMACH RUMBLED WITH ANGER
EVERY TIME I FELL ASLEEP IN CHURCH
Your stomach growled at me every time I broke the school rules
Your stomach was full You burped
You felt satisfied You rubbed your belly and you didn’t care 60
You didn’t care how you ate up my native Culture
You didn’t care if you were messy
if you were piggy
You didn’t care as long as you ate up my Indianness
I hate you Residential School I hate you 65
You’re a monster
Your veins clotted with cruelty and torture
Your blood poisoned with loneliness and despair
Your heart was cold it pumped fear into me
I hate you Residential School I hate you 70
You’re a monster
Your intestines turned me into foul entrails
Your anal squeezed me
squeezed my confidence
squeezed my self respect 75
Your anal squeezed
then you dumped me
Dumped me without parental skills
without life skills
Dumped me without any form of character 80
without individual talents
without a hope for success
I hate you Residential School I hate you 3
You’re a monster
You dumped me in the toilet then 85
You flushed out my good nature
my personalities
I hate you Residential School I hate you
You’re a monster………I hate hate hate you
Thirty three years later 90
I rode my chevy pony to Kamloops
From the highway I saw the monster
My Gawd! The monster is still alive
I hesitated I wanted to drive on
but something told me to stop 95
I parked in front of the Residential School
in front of the monster
The monster saw me and it stared at me
The monster saw me and I stared back
We both never said anything for a long time 100
Finally with a lump in my throat
I said, “Monster I forgive you.”
The monster broke into tears
The monster cried and cried
His huge shoulders shook 105
He motioned for me to come forward
He asked me to sit on his lappy stairs
The monster spoke
You know I didn’t like my Government Father
I didn’t like my Catholic Church Mother 110
I’m glad the Native People adopted me
They took me as one of their own
They fixed me up Repaired my mouth of double doors
Washed my window eyes with cedar and fir boughs
They cleansed me with sage and sweetgrass 115
Now my good spirit lives
The Native People let me stay on their land
They could of burnt me you know instead they let me live
so People can come here to school restore or learn about their culture
The monster said, “I’m glad the Native People gave me another chance 120
I’m glad Dennis you gave me another chance
The monster smiled
I stood up I told the monster I must go
Ahead of me is my life. My people are waiting for me 4
I was at the door of my chevy pony 125
The monster spoke, “Hey you forgot something
I turned around I saw a ghost child running down the cement steps
It ran towards me and it entered my body
I looked over to the monster I was surprised
I wasn’t looking at a monster anymore 130
I was looking at an old school In my heart I thought
This is where I earned my diploma of survival
I was looking at an old Residential School who
became my elder of my memories
I was looking at a tall building with four stories 135
stories of hope
stories of dreams

May we raise children
who love the unloved
things – the dandelion, the
worms and spiderlings.
Children who sense
the rose needs the thorn
& run into rainswept days
the same way they
turn towards sun…
And when they’re grown &
someone has to speak for those
who have no voice
may they draw upon that
wilder bond, those days of
tending tender things
and be the ones.

Today is Bell Let’s Talk Day. Talking about mental health is important today, and every other day of the year, and years to come. We all have mental health and we all have physical health, and there should be no shame in either.
Supporting our own mental health and doing what we can to support one another, discussing mental health as openly and honestly as we do our physical health to help slow stigma down, and talking about mental health to continue to spread awareness for further funding is so important as mental health supports cannot be a frill that only some have access to, these supports are a necessity, and need to be accessible for all.
“#365Convos will involve an investigation of various themes each month in weekly posts that we [Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council] hope will act as catalysts for our community to have conversations. Look for our first monthly theme announcement and weekly post commencement on February 1st.”

#365Convos is a campaign reminding us all to continue the dialogue we open on this day all throughout the 365 days of the year. Days like today can build momentum and #365Convos hopes to continue that momentum, to elevate the conversation, and to elaborate on what we can all do to continually support ourselves, support each other, and support our communities in promoting mental health. #365Convos will involve an investigation of various themes each month in weekly posts that we hope will act as catalysts for our community to have conversations. Look for our first monthly theme announcement and weekly post commencement on February 1st.
#365Convos is about all of us, and all the conversations we can be collectively having when we focus on mental health 365 days of the year. We encourage you to have conversations with friends, family, coworkers, and peers. We encourage you to learn about how you can have these conversations safely and learn about what community resources you can access when you or someone you know is struggling. We encourage you to join us in having 365 conversations about mental health this year, 365 days of the year, as we join together in #365Convos.

Play turns out to be so stunningly essential to childhood, it’s like love, sunshine, and broccoli all juice together – Lenore Skenazy
This is one of my most favorite quotes. Play is foundational, not just to children, to all of us young and old. Play allows for so many possibilities: to use our imaginations and be creative, to have an outlet and release, to try out new possibilities and ways of being, and the list of benefits goes on and on! Play has always been so important, yet the need for play in our lives today grows during these difficult times, and deserves a resounding yes please!

A wonderful neuroscience teacher of mine, once taught me, that our brains are Teflon for positives and Velcro for negatives, explaining that we could have a lot of positive happen to us during the day, and how sometimes it just takes one negative to really stick, and get us stuck.
Here is a great article that discusses the benefits of teaching your children positive affirmations and how to do so. Affirmations are one way to help train our brain to focus on and sit in what’s going well. Affirmations can be helpful for people of all ages, but it can be especially helpful to start building this foundation when children are young, so they are better able to access this tool as they grow and face life challenges. “Like wildflowers, you must allow yourself to grow in all the places people thought you never would.” – E.V.
The main person who we should prove it to, is ourselves. Often times, we are our own worst critics, not believing in our full abilities, which accidentally holds us back. Believing in the possibilities of growth, is like planting a seed, it allows us to take root and grow, even in all the places we never thought possible.

Coming out of the weekend and into another busy week ahead, I wonder if we can hold onto any moments where we may have had an opportunity to slow down, to be present, to appreciate the beauty around us. It is easy to feel overwhelmed and lost in our to-do lists and thoughts. I like this image for the awareness that it brings, but I think it’s important to note that being mindful is sometimes still having all these to-do lists and thoughts in our heads, but trying our best to re-connect with ourselves and our breath in the present moment, and allow these thoughts to pass by, like a stick floating on the water, without judgement, maybe just a little curiosity. Easier said than done for sure. To help us ground in the present moment, it can be helpful to use the 5,4,3,2,1 technique, paying attention to: (5) 5 things we see, (4) 4 things we feel, (3) 3 things we hear, (2) 2 things we smell, and lastly, (1) 1 thing we taste.

No matter what you’re going through, big or small, I hope that you can believe in yourself. Although there are already pages written in our book, there are many strengths in that story, tales of how we’ve overcome. The future pages are unwritten, even if we have a plot in mind, the story can change. What if we added characters to our story who were supports? What if we added additional commas, semicolons, and colons to take a pause? One word at a time.
